When visiting the mysterious stone citiy, you'll wonder how those immense logs were transported - and why the city was built there in the first place.
On the Nan Madol trip, don't miss the waterfall. After swimming in the fresh water pool at the base of Keperhoi, you'll find your cares are washed away - as if by magic. (Also see 6 waterfall hike.)
On the Nan Madol trip, lunch is eaten on a beautiful sandy beach. Although snorkeling is pretty good, there's usually someone who'd rather take a nap.
Besides all the white sand beaches and coconut trees, the diving in the entrance, is simply breathtaking.
The vertical walls of the reef are not to be believed.
An experienced guide will go where you can see birds seldom seen.
The "perfect" wave starts as a storm swell in Japan, Siberia or Alaska, and lasts from November until May.
... the service and the atmosphere were outstanding. I recommend the fishing services at the Village. Ron Isom
Because we may not have all the right stuff, bring the fishing gear you'll need. This includes plugs and poppers, favorite rods, and reels with line.
Although a boat and an experienced fishing guide are available for lagoon fishing, the most popular style of fishing locally is hand trolling for tuna in the open ocean.
Kayaking is something you have to do. Not only easy to do, it's fun too. Nothing compares with gliding, almost soundlessly, through the mangrove forests and channels.
A Sokehs Rock climb requires an experienced guide and the ability to climb a tree along the way. A cable guard goes up the rock and helps with the steep climb.
A hike to see the Japanese guns and other war relics on the top of Sokehs Ridge can be done without a guide. The climb is started from the Sokehs Municipal Office; the road is steep, but clear.
Although ships do go to outer islands, the journeys are on a vessel with a very unreliable schedule. Recommended for those who are able to put up with an occasional hardship.
A vehicle and well-versed guides are used to see places of interest around the island.
Pohnpei is handicraft heaven. In Porakiet (Kapinga Village), the men carve sharks and dophins from mangrove wood, while the women weave intricate wall hangings.
Several birds thought to be extinct have been sighted.
Reef life is mostly above where the coral ends - between 75 and 100 feet.
At the Village, Ponape Pedlar makes popular one-of-kind necklaces from mother-of-pearl shell and ivory nuts.
Sakau is the traditional drink, and every island ceremony revolves around it. It's made by pounding the sakau roots on a flat rock, and straining the juice through rolled-up hibiscus bark.
A wedding in the gazebo is a joyous occasion. The whole crew adorns the bridge with fresh flowers, and coconut fronds are wrapped around the Long House poles.
When in a boat and looking at coral reefs on the soutth side, watch the birds fly through the dappled sunlight in the tall stately mangrove stands.
Because the leaf canopy is above 40 feet, a young sapling has to grow tall in one season. It's a very impressive sight !
